Watercooling - Waste of time and money!!??

This ladies and gentlemen is why we dont buy prebuilt watercooling its *Roll :roll:

As was said, try it on your GPU and see if it cools that better than your CPU. If not, see if you can send it back and get a more exspensive air cooler.

 

Well, i put the Hyper cooler back on and idling at 32 now (i got better thermal paste since i first installed it) so i get 18C difference from aircooling!! it's on my gpu at the moment (thin layer of thermal paste and it's 3-4C better than with the stock cooler. Man this pre-bulit watercooler sux waste of $48 i could have spent on a new HD.

I didn't really expect 'good' water-cooling, but i was kind of expecting a 4-5C drop at least and maybe squeeze a little bit more from this 'ol chip. oh well, it gave me a 4C drop on my 4850 (i think, more testing needed) the 4850 aren't as hot as people say - around 65 under heavy load with aircooling - i've heard them stable in their 80's!
But my 4850 is already at 410core, i doubt i can get anything else out of it without increasing the voltage past 1.2 which i can't do as i don;t have a reference board (p.s. if anyone knows how to do the pencil volt mod on a gigabyte board the help would be appreciated). So at the end of the day a waste of time and money. - maybe someone should put a big sticky up that reads ##Don't buy pre-built watercooling## *Big Grin

 

Dont you mean 710 core? *Stick Out Tongue a 4850 at 410 would be seriously underclocked.

Irun mine at 730/1150 for games and 750/1200 for benching.It is modded with rbe for 1.158v high 3d.Btw modding the bios for 1.2 does not work,the max with a bios mod is 1.158.Unless your hard modded of course *Smile

[update] stable gpu temp is now only 1C below stock cooling. jeez this watercooling rig sux

This will cool your cpu fine,and you can even add a bigger rad and a gpu block too,its a cracking little pump,which is also upgradeable with custom pump tops(you would need a cpu block though if putting a top on the pump)

 

thats the kit similar to what i started with when i first got into watercooling.

@OP, WC is great only when it is custom. When you have a crappy enclosed unit, the water heats up and you end up trying to cool a Intel Processor with hot water. Obviously this is not a great way to do it.

Go custom, or go air would be my 2 cents.

 

thankfully, I let y'all school me on water cooling before I purchased anything, so I completely avoided the kits.


but, I've run into what I assume to be a common issue with purchasing everything individually - some case modification might be in order to properly fit things inside the case. Only reason why I haven't gotten around to setting up my system is I've just been too lazy to take the dremel to my current case . . . *Oh Well hwell:

 

i ahve had 2 pre built kits and wasted prob $350 on them, i wasn't untill i went custom that i saw the real bennifit but it has cost me $500+ (aussie) and im still to get a GPU block but i think it was worth it, for the most part high end air coolers keep up with most pre built water coolers, its just personal choice if you want the spend several hundered on a decent water loop and if you answer is i dont know then i would say dont bother with water again for a while and just stick with air coolers

 

I went custom on my first kit. Basically the Swiftech 120 with a better radiator. I added a water block to my GPU and was able to get the temps down enough that I could actually close the case. However, I did learn that while a 120mm radiator is fine for "normal" computing, but any serious overclocking it is not able to keep up.

Going with a slightly different setup for my current PC - separate GPU block and pump, and a 240 mm radiator. That is as soon as my wallet lets me. *Frown

 

yup, i think i'll leave off watercooling for a while - definitely a hobby for people with time and money to burn. I'd read a few reviews of it before and almost all said it was a good cooler! a couple rated it along side real good air-coolers. So i didn't have huge hopes for it, but i expected it to do something. ah well at least the lights on the viva look pretty.

No, but i'm having a read now, thanks EC. It seems to work ok on my HD4850. temp drop of just 1-2C but "memio" and "shadercore" have dropped about 6C each. I doubt i could take it back anyway, it's a little scratched from pulling it in and out many times, and also it'd be a pain to get all the nuts and bolts sorted and into the right baggies.
