Mickey: Random system hangs when display adapter driver is installed

I got a laptop from a friend for free (this is a good start, I know). It's an old Acer Aspire V5-122P.

Everything works fine until I (or Windows update) install any Radeon driver - then the system produces random hangs every couple of seconds. The mouse cursor freezes, the whole screen freezes, and background CPU usage of the process called "System" fluctuates between 20-50%, like so:
