Mickey: Possible reasons why a monitor would show display briefly and shut off?

I got a new graphics card and a new monitor.
The monitor is an LG 24 24gn600.

When i connect them via an HDMI cable everything works fine.
However, when i connect them via a Displayport cable(also new), i get a display for 2-3seconds and then the monitor shuts off.

Under the monitor a red light turns on, however i do not know if that's just a standby light or it's indicating an error of some sort.
